Small Scale: Creative Solutions for Better City Living

A collaboration between Architect Gerard Damiani and Artist Jeremy Boyle is profiled in the recently released Small Scale: Creative Solutions for Better City Living by Princeton Architectural Press.

A quote from Princeton Architectural Press:

“Think big, design small. This is the rallying cry of a new generation of architects and artists who aim to improve the lives of city-dwellers through small-scale public design projects. Using the city as an open-source platform for ideas, these visionaries create "urban interventions" to address problems specific to urban life. Small Scale presents fifty ingenious yet simple projects ranging from the purely conceptual to the fully realized.

The projects in Small Scale are organized into three sections: those that provide practical services, those that share information, and those that simply delight. Each project is eminently achievable and most do not require many permits or much government oversight or tremendous use of natural resources; indeed, some suggest solutions to the larger problem of energy consumption. Designed by both well-known and up-and-coming architects the projects in Small Scale reflect the promise of new ideas, new materials, and new technologies.”

Judges’ Comments:
“We found the dialogue between the old industrial shell and the new home to be both compelling and highly resolved. Consistent and restrained use of materials reinforced the all-over design ideas. Use of light and space was original and exciting. Also, we found there to be a seamless integration of the interior and exterior that energized a courtyard type & urban site."

studio d'ARC receives 2009 AIA Pittsburgh Honor Award for South Side Courtyard House

Lead Jury Allison Williams, FAIA

"Very mature work that layers day light, volumes and planes to establish a successful and consistent dialogue between inside and outside, a concept unusually indoor / outdoor for a Pittsburgh home. The existing masonry wall engages in this dialogue to define space. It is a terrific example of warm livable modernism"

"As regional architects reconsidering Pittsburgh, we're not trying to import a style. We're making something of this region."

2008 Design Pittsburgh Honor Award

" We appreciated the way the architect mirrored the scale of the street, but introduced a very contemporary building- it is a very approachable project. The house does an excellent job of addressing the street and is responsible to the backyard as well. The architect was skillful in getting light into all the spaces even though this is a tight restricted site. The quality of the detailing of the materials is impressive. The project used a beautiful, elegant, and simple palette of materials and reduced them down to the essence of their beauty."
